Today, I dropped Bubbles off at her mom's at around 8:45. By 9:15, I was at Luna Pier for a rainy session on the water. I parked, went over and paid for 2 hours of parking and then made my way down to the water where Ryan was already riding. He indicated that my nine meter kite was the right choice by nodding when I held up nine fingers. I assumed that meant he was on his nine. Later, I found out that this wasn't the case. I pumped up my nine and walked my lines. I was on the water around 9:40 and the nine was the perfect size. I was having a great session and after only about 15 minutes of riding, I heard a KLUNK on my board and felt the vibrations in my feet. Odd, I thought. I must have hit a submerged branch or something. A little later, I was curious about how far I had ridden, to I reached down to take a peek at the GPS. What I saw instead was an empty pouch. Right away, I knew what that klunk sound was. Bye, bye GPS. Disappointing, but not session ruining. At around 11:30 or so, I did a pretty big jump. When I landed, I lost control of the kite. It slammed into the surf really hard and ripped the kite in the second smallest panel on the left side. It ripped from front to back and along the leading edge. That was session ruining. I didn't want to be done riding, so I pumped up my 12 meter kite. I rigged it completely depowered so that I would be able to hold it down. Unfortunately, there was just too much wind. I was really glad that one of the windsurfer guys was right there to catch it for me. It wasn't until I read Ryans description of the day on redsky's blog that I found out he was on his 7 meter kite that whole time. No wonder my 12 was to big! So, there it is. Total cost of the day... too much. Total fun... enough. That was the first time I've ever gone out in solid rain like that. By the time we left, it was coming down really really hard. I was soaked and freezing, so I made a quick call to BigBro and Froggy to see if I could change at their house. They weren't home, so I called Froggy on her cell and asked if I could use the garage to change. Lucky for me, she answered and said yes. That made the drive home much less uncomfortable. |
