CITO 2006-04-22 |
Today, BBCK and I participated in Cache In Trash Out (CITO). Our even was organized by Northwest Ohio Geocaching. They had two events scheduled for the day. In the morning, they met at Swan Creek Metropark and did some work there. I understand that 8 people showed up for that. I didn't go to the morning portion. Instead, I opted to take part in the afternoon clean-up at Wildwood Metropark. GAWD I love that park. I've always thought of that park as one of the cleanest parks I've ever been to. And, it is if you don't go off the trails.
Being Earth Day, there were lots of groups that showed up to clean up the park and I suspect that there were several tons of trash taken to the dump at the end of the day. I had no idea what anyone from the NWOGEO group looked like, so BBCK and I waited at the visitor center looking for someone - anyone - with a NWOGEO t-shirt on. We saw no such shirts. We ended up waiting until about 20 after 1pm until I went into the information office at the visitor center and asked if she knew which part of the park they were working in. The lady called to "Jeff" on her walkie-talkie and asked if we could join them. Jeff explained where they were and BBCK and I were off to get grubby dirty.
When we got to the work area in the floodplain as seen in this photo. It's a really large area and it is FULL of flood debris. We were each supplied with a pair of gloves and a boat ride to the other side of the creek. There, we picked up several garbage bags full of bottles, cans, styrofoam, tennis balls, and tennis balls and tennis balls. There may have even been a few tennis balls in there somewhere. I'm not sure what happened to the focus/lighting on this picture, but here's one of the two boatloads that we ferried across .
We didn't do any geocaching today, but attending the event counts as a CITO Event Cache, so that's cool.
BBCK got a wet foot early on when I sent her to get a bag off of a pile of sticks that were semi-floating - My bad. Then, she had to pee a few minutes later and the wind picked up just as she squatted next to a tree. Pants wet in two spots. At that point, I was perfectly happy to let her sit with Cadence an talk to the ranger.
After we were done, we went to Taco Bell for dinner. |
