Happy Mother's Day, Aimee

Happy Mothers Day

I've been itching to flex my calligraphy muscles, lately. It's an ancient art form that I thoroughly enjoy doing. Apparently, calligraphy is experiencing a resurgence, of late.

Now that Aimee has this, I can finally share it with you, too. You see, Aimee has a framed poem in her cubicle at work that I just adore. It is a poem that Kelly, her daughter, wrote 5 or 6 years ago, when she was a freshman in high school. Those of us with kids know that these are the best gifts we get from our kids - the ones that don't cost anything, the ones that come from the heart. The ones that they really put thought into.

Every time I visit Aimee's cube, I read it again. Every time I read it I laughed. I offered to reproduce the poem in calligraphy for Kelly to give it again this year. She loved the idea and gave me the go-ahead.

It took me about a week, working on it here and there for a no more than an hour per day. I took pictures as I went so that you could enjoy the process, which typically goes something like this...

  • Figure out what size pens you have
  • Guestimate which one will work best given the length of the work and the size of the paper
  • Line the paper for the appropriate size pens and guesswork
  • Write out the entire work in pencil
  • Proof read it
  • Proof read it again
  • Get someone else to proof read it
  • Fix any errors
  • Procrastinate
  • Do some of it in ink until your hand tires
  • Procrastinate
  • Repeat previous 2 steps until complete
  • Erase pencil lines
  • Add squiggly lines
  • Look again for errors - though probably too late

I took it over to Aimee last night and she really liked it. Ss always, and as if to solidify our original relationship as Project Director/Survey Programmer, she found an error within a few minutes. There's always something. Can you spot it? I bet you can.
